Hiring Contractor/Installer
The relationship you have with your contractor is an important one. The following questions can help you determine the reliability, reputation and experience of a contractor as well as dedication to providing you with the best vinyl siding system possible. We've outlined some important points to consider as you evaluate the terms of your proposed job contract. Being confident you've selected the right siding contractor will help assure you that your hard-earned money has been wisely spent.
Be sure you interview the contractor and ask the following questions. The Homeowner's Guide to Choosing a Professional Siding Contractor will help you determine why the answers to the questions below are so important.
• What is the full name and address for the company?
• Does the company carry insurance?
• Is the company licensed?
• Is the company credentialed?
• How long has the company been in business?
• Will the company provide referrals or references from previous jobs?
• What is the company's workmanship warranty? This is different than the product warranty.
• What is the company's track record for solving customer complaints?

Many contractors participate in training programs offered by professional associations, manufacturers and suppliers, earning special certifications and other credentials, such as the CertainTeed Master Craftsman program. Such efforts are an indication of professionalism as well as skill level.

In addition to the Master Craftsman program, Certainteed has established a new standard of excellence for siding contracotors, the 5-Star Contractor Program. To be certified as a 5-Star Contractor, installers must complete and pass our vinyl siding Master Craftsman test and our Restoration Millwork Master craftsman test in additon to the VSI Certified Installer course. Those who achieve this certification have received the highest level of training on CertainTeed vinly siding and Restoration Millwork products. In addition to pass the three courses mentioned, a 5-Star Contractor must show proof of insurance, both Liabililty and Workers' Compenstation (where required by law).

Evaluating An Estimate
As you evaluate bids from prospective contractors, be sure to consider the total package rather than focusing on a single factor such as price. Higher estimates may include additional elements that are well worth the extra cost -- and homeowners who go with the lowest bid are often less satisfied with the results. Closely compare the competing contractors credentials and references, proposed schedules, whether or not they carry liability and workers' comp and other bid components before making a final decision.
